In middle school Matt's homeroom teacher was in charge of the school's yearbook, and he had his students help out. Matt can recall the way the darkroom looked, and distinctly remembers the magic when he saw his first print appear under the safelight.

Around the same time, he started using his Dad's Ricoh Singlex SLR, which was a nice match needle camera. He still has a 50mm f1.4 lens for it from his Dad.

In high school he again worked on the yearbook staff, this time doing quite a large bit of the photography and darkroom work. Matt also took a graphic arts class, and learned the "rule of thirds", which he still utilizes regularly. That ends his "formal" training in photography, so he is mostly self taught.

Matt considers what he does "glorified snapshots". He loathes tripods, and rarely does any kind of pre-planning of a photograph. His favorite subjects are candid portraits, and he would like to do more street photography in the style of Henri Cartier Bresson and Gary Winogrand. He is quite shy, so his photographs of strangers have so far been done on the sly. He would like to change that, and do more reportage style portraits, where he learns something about his subjects beyond what they look like.

He likes the gear aspect of photography, but feels that the camera is the least important part of a good photograph. A good photographer can take an engaging photo with any camera that they are familiar with, whether it's a Holga, Hasselblad, or a disposable.

Matt thinks digital cameras are a great learning tool, but prefesr the look of film, and the simpler nature of old film cameras.
